Internally Headed Relative Clause Constructions in Korean

چکیده

This paper attempts to analyze some grammatical aspects of the so called internally-headed relative clause construction in Korean. This paper proposes that the meaning of the external head kes is underspecified in the sense that its semantic content is filled in by co-indexing it to the internal head under appropriate conditions. This paper also argues that interpretation of kes is determined by the verb following it. Dealing also with the pragmatics of the construction, this paper argues that the crucial characteristics of the construction in question resides in pragmatics rather than in semantics.

A Computational Implementation of Internally Headed Relative Clause Constructions

The so-called Internally Headed Relative Clause (IHRC) construction found in the head-final languages Korean and Japanese has received little attention from computational perspectives even though it is frequently found in both text and speech. This is partly because there have been no grammars precise enough to allow deep processing of the construction’s syntactic and semantic properties. This ...

To appear in Natural Language and Linguistic Theory E-type Anaphora and Three Types of Kes-Construction in Korean

The overarching goal of this article is to account for why the Internally-Headed Relative Clause, the direct perception, and the factive constructions in Korean have an identical form involving the pronominal kes and the relativizer -un, despite the fact that one construction instantiates relativization and the other two instantiate complementation. I solve this puzzle by recasting Kim’s (2007)...

Differences between Externally and Internally Headed Relative Clause Constructions

They all describe events of an apple’s being on the tray and Tom’s eating it. But, there exist several intriguing differences between the two constructions. One crucial difference between the IHRC and EHRC comes from the fact that the semantic object of mekessta ‘ate’ in IHRC examples like (1)a is the NP sakwa ‘apple’ buried inside the embedded clause followed by kes. It is thus the subject of ...
